Iva Ivanova, artiste Bulgare, a étudié la scénographie à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Vienne dans l’atelier de Anna Viebrock. Cela fait plusieurs années que Iva travaille comme costumière dans les théâtres à Vienne, Berlin, Sofia, Shanghai et Zurich.
En 2017, elle remporte un prix pour séjourner et travailler durant six mois au Swatch Art Peace Hotel à Shanghai, résidence d’artiste ultra réputée en Asie et dans le monde entier. C’est dans cette résidence que nous nous sommes rencontrées. Iva c’est un personnage, une femme hors du commun et je suis honorée de pouvoir être son amie.
Un crayon, une feuille, un carnet, des lignes qui s’entremêlent sur un fond blanc ou coloré et qui forment petit à petit un visage, un corps. Une étonnante réalité transcrite à la manière de l’artiste, des images du quotidien transformées en formes figuratives presque hybrides, le travail de Iva est à la fois fragile et puissant. Son trait quasi enfantin et ses fonds pastels nous font tout de suite penser à l’œuvre de Anne-Marie Schneider. On y retrouve une similitude dans la ligne qui est proche de l’écriture et dans le thème de l'inquiétante étrangeté. Iva raconte des histoires dans ses carnets, qui sont personnelles et énigmatiques.
Est-ce un jeu pour le spectateur ? Quel est le message derrière ces symboles ?
Loin d’être naïfs, ces dessins spontanés et poétiques nous transportent dans le monde de l’artiste. Nous attendons le bus, participons aux répétitions théâtrales et nous devenons doucement l’ami de Iva. L’artiste nous emmène partout avec elle et finalement nous faisons parti intégrante de son histoire. Simple et efficace, son trait épuré en dit beaucoup sur l'artiste qui aime être proche de la nature et des gens. Les vaches posent tour à tour devant l'artiste, les amoureux se tiennent par la main, un homme promène son chien et ainsi nous nous baladons doucement dans le quotidien de Iva Ivanova.

Iva Ivanova is a Bulgarian artist. She studied stage design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in Anna Viebrock's studio. Iva has worked as a costume designer for several years in theaters in Vienna, Berlin, Sofia, Shanghai and Zurich.
In 2017, she won a prize that allowed her to stay and work for six months at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai, a renowned artist residency in Asia and around the world. Iva and I met at this residency program. Ivanova is a “character”, a very special woman and I’m so grateful to be her friend.
A pencil, a piece of paper, a notebook, black lines dancing on a white or colored background and gradually forming a face, a body. An astonishing reality drawn in the artist’s way, random images transformed into hybrid figurative forms, Iva's work is both fragile and powerful. Its “childish” feature and its pastel backgrounds immediately remind us of French artist Anne-Marie Schneider’s drawings. There is a similarity in the line that is close to a writing line. Iva tells stories in her notebooks, which are personal and enigmatic.
Is it a game for the viewer? What is the message behind these symbols?
Far from being naive, these spontaneous and poetic drawings transport us inside Iva’s uncanny world. We wait for the bus, participate in theatre rehearsals and we slowly become Iva's friend. The artist takes us everywhere with her and finally we are an integral part of her story. Simple and effective, Iva’s drawings tell a lot about her, as she likes to be close to nature and people. Cows are posing in front of the artist, lovers are holding hands, a man is walking his dog out and we slowly walk inside Iva’s daily life.
